Hi ,
This one is everywhere right now. Influencers, supplement brands, even some coaches are pushing it.
"Your metabolism is broken. You need to reset it."
It sounds convincing, especially if you've been dieting for months and the scale won't move. But the science behind "metabolic resets" ranges from oversimplified to completely made up.
P.S. Not sure how many calories you should be eating to lose fat? I've built a free calculator that gives you your number in under 60 seconds. [Try it here.]
YOUR METABOLISM IS NOT BROKEN
First, the important distinction: metabolic adaptation is real. Metabolic damage is not.
When you diet, your body adapts. You weigh less, so you burn fewer calories at rest. Your hormones shift to conserve energy. You move less without realising it (NEAT drops). This is your body doing exactly what it's designed to do: protect you from starvation.
But this adaptation is modest. Research shows it typically accounts for 30 to 100 fewer calories per day beyond what the weight loss itself explains. That's real, but it's not the reason you've stopped losing weight. It's the equivalent of half a banana.
The reason most people stall is simpler: they're eating more than they think, moving less than they realise, or they've been in a deficit so long that adherence has slipped. Not a broken metabolism. A compliance gap.
WHAT "METABOLIC RESET" PRODUCTS ACTUALLY DO
Detox teas, reset supplements, 7-day cleanse programmes. None of these have been proven to enhance metabolic rate. Your liver and kidneys already detoxify your body continuously. That's literally their job.
Most "reset" products work through one of two mechanisms: extreme calorie restriction (which causes temporary weight loss from water and glycogen, not fat) or laxative effects (which cause temporary weight loss from your bowels, not your fat cells).
The weight comes back the moment you eat normally again. You haven't reset anything. You've just dehydrated yourself and confused the scale.
THE MYTH: "EAT 1200 CALORIES TO KICKSTART YOUR METABOLISM"
This is backwards. Eating very low calories for extended periods is what causes metabolic adaptation in the first place. Dropping to 1200 calories doesn't reset your metabolism. It drives it further into conservation mode.
Your body responds to prolonged restriction by lowering thyroid output, reducing NEAT, increasing hunger hormones, and making you more efficient at storing fat when calories return. The deeper and longer the cut, the stronger the adaptation.
Going lower is not the fix. It's the cause.
WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS
If your fat loss has stalled after months of dieting, here's what the evidence supports:
Take a diet break. Eat at maintenance calories for 1 to 2 weeks. A 2024 systematic review found that intermittent dieting with structured break periods is a viable strategy to improve body composition and reduce metabolic adaptation. This isn't quitting. It's strategic.
Check your actual intake. Track everything for 7 days. Weigh your food. Most people underestimate their intake by 30 to 50%. The problem is usually the data, not the metabolism.
Protect your muscle. If you've been dieting without resistance training, you've likely lost muscle alongside fat. Less muscle means a lower resting metabolic rate. Start lifting.
Increase NEAT. Walk more. Stand more. Take the stairs. The calories you burn outside the gym account for far more of your daily expenditure than the workout itself.
Be patient. Reverse dieting, gradually increasing calories back to maintenance, can help with adherence and psychological recovery after a long cut. It won't magically boost your metabolism, but it gives your body and your brain a chance to normalise.
THE BOTTOM LINE
There is no reset button. There is no tea, supplement, or 7-day programme that will restart your metabolism. What there is: a body that adapts to what you do, and responds when you give it what it needs.
If you've been in a deficit for months and you're stuck, you don't need a reset. You need a break, a reality check on your intake, and a plan that's actually sustainable.
